SAC Initiatives
For nearly 40 years…
SAC has been a leader in the effort to promote ocean recreation, protect our marine ecosystems and preserve access to the abundant inshore and offshore waters off California and Baja California.
Nobody has a greater stake in maintaining a clean environment and healthy, sustainable fisheries than the vessel owners and operators of SAC, who provide access to recreational activities for millions of people every year.
Here are a few of the ways SAC is working to keep our waters healthy and accessible:
Marine Life Protected Area Development
The Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) of 1999 directs the state to redesign California’s system of marine protected areas (MPAs) to function as a network in order to: increase coherence and effectiveness in protecting the state’s marine life and habitats, marine ecosystems, and marine natural heritage, as well as to improve recreational, educational and study opportunities provided by marine ecosystems subject to minimal human disturbance. >>Read More
Isla Guadalupe Project
Isla Guadalupe is 220 miles from San Diego in Mexican waters. Bill Poole made the first trip to Isla Guadalupe and encountered outstanding fishing for yellowfin tuna. Over the following fifty years the San Diego sportfishing fleet has visited the island for outstanding fall tuna fishing. >> Read More
Revillagigedo Project
The Revillagigedo Island chain lies hundreds of miles south of Cabo San Lucas. The islands are actually the tops of old volcanoes. These islands boast incredibly good fishing for large yellowfin tuna. The islands were closed a decade ago because of illegal activities by commercial fishermen. >> Read More
Pacific Island Biosphere Development
The Pacific Island Biosphere (PIB) is in simple terms all of the islands off the Mexican coast on the west side of Baja California. The PIB is scheduled to be created as a protected area in 2011. This will include Los Coronados Islands, Cedros Island and Todos Santos Island. >> Read More
Cow Cod Conservation Area Proposal
The CCA is 4,700 square miles of closed ocean off the Southern California Coast. Its purpose at the point of creations in 2001 was to protect a species of ground fish known as the Cow Cod. Over the following decade, extensive research was conducted including many observations from a remotely operated vehicle. >> Read More
